nonprofit animal organizations Humane societies in Minnesota receive no financing from the federal, state or local governments and, because they are not affiliated with national humane societies, receive no funding from national organizations. Other nonprofit animal shelters, rescue groups, and associations also do not receive government funding. While all these nonprofits must follow State and local laws, they must also raise their own money to protect, care for and act on behalf of animals in Minnesota. There is no ‘state fund’ to support the efforts of these organizations, though most of their missions are dealing with the problem created by over-breeding and unwanted animals due to an unregulated dog and cat breeding industry.
Animal Humane Society The Animal Humane Society (AHS, headquartered in Golden Valley, Minnesota) operates five shelters, receiving over 40,000 animals a year. It is the only humane society in Minnesota that also operates a Humane Investigations division and employs humane officers (two full-time) who work closely with local law enforcement to serve the State of Minnesota and parts of the Upper Midwest. AHS receives approximately 5,000 service calls a year dealing with animal cruelty and neglect issues involving dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, birds, bison, cows, wolves — all animals.
