Minnesota Department of Agriculture (M.D.A.)

Based in St. Paul with over 450 employees, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (M.D.A.) has existed for more than 100 years. Its general areas of responsibility include: “protecting our food supply; protecting our natural resources; and cultivating our agricultural economy.” It’s estimated that Minnesota agriculture represents $53 billion in economic activity for the State.

The M.D.A.’s services are targeted primarily to Minnesota farmers (the state’s agricultural sector), dealing with issues relating to plants and animals.

The M.D.A. is directed by a Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture, who is appointed by the Governor. This person, along with the Deputy Commissioner, Assistant Commissioners and staff, have specific duties and responsibilities which follow Minnesota Statues, Chapter 17.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s primary focus is in regards to food and health. If animals spread disease to humans (zoonotics), the M.D.A. is involved.

As of 2008, the MDA Commissioner is Gene Hugoson.
